Reading Reflection #7

Book: Not That Kind of Girl
Author: Siobhan Vivian
Pages: 322

Unlike many books I read I found myself agreeing with the ideas of characters that weren't the main character. I mean, the main character was all into feminism and ideas about how strong females should act and a year ago i might have completely agreed with her. but things aren't that black and white. I think that just because a woman or a girl is not afraid of their sexuality and are confident with their bodies, while also respecting themselves she should not be called a slut. just because a girl wants a boyfriend and wants to be wanted doesn't make her weak. it can make her vulnerable if she cannot control herself or lets herself get taken advantage of but it's not wrong. why should a girl be called a slut if she hooks up with a couple of boys but a boy is congratulated? Why is it sexy for a girl to dress revealingly in magazines and on tv but it's wrong to dress like that in real life? The main character at had no idea what it was even like to kiss a boy and yet she was passing judgements over girls who were experimenting with their sexuality. and then when the main character who is not only on the fast track to Standford, president of the student council, etc, etc becomes the girlfriend of a boy on the football team, a boy she has come to know and love, people judge her as more of a slut than as what her actually accomplishments are. where does that make sense?
