Book: Incarceron
Author: Catherine Fisher
Pages Read: about 300
This book brings up a lot of really deep themes. The book
shows the difference between people living in the huge sealed Prison Incarceron
and the Outside. It kind of trips you out, thinking about reality. What is
"Inside" and what is "Outside"? And what's the difference?
The characters on the Inside are desperately trying to Escape, trying to find a
way out of the prison because it's a terrible place of famine, disease, cruelty
and the Eye of Incareration watching over them at all times, controlling the
whole large prison, deciding whether the inmates (who are the decendents of the
original inmates and haven't actually done anything wrong) live or die. But the
Outside is hardly much better. The other main character Claudia who lives on
the outside eats well and has a roof over her head but that's because she's
rich and to be married to the future King. The majority of the people on the
Outside live in poverty. And Claudia lives in constant fear, playing the
dangerous political games with her father, future husband and the Queen. She
lives in a place where all technological advances are outlawed because one of
the past kings of the land stopped time in an era of Victorian England. So
really the Outside is also a prison. So is it better to have the illusion of
freedom or to know that you're a prisoner?
